Nintendo rules OK in the US

by Techno Witch on July 20, 2008

Nintendo is doing extremely well in this round of console wars, be it in the portable or home-based arena with the DS Lite and Wii, respectively. Their efforts have paid off handsomely as the latest sales figures available from NPD for the month of June has showed that there is more to boosting sales than just a single multiplayer platform record breaking game ala Grand Theft Auto IV or an exclusive release such as Metal Solid Gear 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PS3. Slow and steady wins the race, and somehow the Wii has hit a sweet spot with Americans since it was released at the end of 2006. Amazingly enough, it is the only console of this generation that has yet to experience a price cut, while its main rivals, the Xbox 360 and PS3 have already seen lowered prices a number of times to date. The Nintendo Wii has surpassed the Xbox 360 from Microsoft in terms of units sold (in the US, of course), touching 11,008,200 units sold compared to the Xbox 360’s 10,465,900 count.

According to NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier, ?the video games industry continues to perform in the face of an ever-increasingly difficult economic environment as many turn to more in-home entertainment. Even if growth slows over the back half of 2008, the industry is poised to achieve record-breaking revenues of over $22 billion for the year.?

The Sony PS3 ain’t doing too shabby either, thanks to the recent Metal Gear Solid 4 launch that managed to move 405,000 units. Of course, the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV did not materialize into strong hardware sales despite record-breaking sales of the game. I suppose the Xbox 360 sales figures have reached a plateau in its homeland, and as the economic squeeze tightens, most people will opt for the much cheaper Nintendo Wii instead. Interesting times are ahead for gamers, regardless of which camp you’re in.

I will never quite understand why designers feel the need to ‘redefine’ toasters. It browns bread people, not really exciting stuff. Although there are those bizarre ones who actually blacken their toast to a charred crisp and on purpose no less. Now that is exciting, well not exciting really but it’s at least interesting. The cool thing with this toaster, is even though it features a completely new design, it’s not just a concept. This one is actually being sold at place, with stuff. I know, I was shocked too.

Then again, it’s just being sold at Hammacher and Schlemmer who likes to sell random overpriced gadgets. Therefore completely new and different toasters are right up their alley as long as they can price them for a ridiculous amount. The toaster features this trapdoor design, which you can obviously see from the picture. It also has automatic guide tracks for your bagels and all the other larger things you like to toast. Among the more exciting speccs it features a 6-position electronic browning control, internal cord storage and states that the stainless steel and black plastic wipe clean. Wow, they were really fishing for more speccs to throw that last one in. To pick up your own it will cost you $79.95.

The Voltaic Generator Laptop Bag finally priced

by Techno Witch on July 20, 2008

It’s always fun waiting for the latest and greatest tech toys to come out. However, it’s just cruel when they post ‘Coming Soon’ or anything along those lines. Then there really is no way to know when it will finally come out. This Voltaic Generator is one that was supposed to be coming for a while now, considering it was announced at CES way back in January. Although the Voltaic bag is just another solar powered bag, it does have one extra that isn’t always featured. The materials used are actually environmentally conscious.

The bag is made of recycled PET bottles or soda bottles. According to the site it also uses a solar cell supplier that has higher efficiency cells which in turn gives a faster charging time. It turns out, that solar cell supplier is the reason for the delays in releasing the bag. Although the bag itself isn’t new news, someone actually managed to find the site that was selling it and give it a price tag. However, sadly it states that it will be released in the spring of this year. Obviously, since it is well past then, there is no way to know when it will finally be released. Once it does it will be sold for $599 and it can hold up to a 17″ laptop.

We?ve all been in that situation whereby we?ve been out and our mobile phone goes dead due to forgetting to recharge it before going out. Maybe you are in a bar, you ask if they have a charger you could borrow and they don?t, so what can you do, not much, probably have to wait until you get back home to recharge.

However, what if there was a device available that could be placed in every bar, restaurant, nightclub, and street café, a device that which is a cheap universal charger that not only can charge mobile phones but any device that uses a USB or microUSB.

Such is the concept of the Juicejack; simple put, the Juicejack is a universal charger with its own internal power source that could be kept at bars and cafes or unplugged and taking to a table to charge the device.

The Juicejack is a circular juice pack with nine differing plugs which connect to mobile devices ranging from the Apple iPhone and iPod series to the LG Chocolate series, from Samsung D800 series to Motorola V3 series and a couple of Nokia series as well. There is also a standard USB port along with a microUSB, so the Juicejack can virtually cover just about any mobile device out there.

I found the Juicejack a not too cumbersome device that when plugged into the power supply can be easily placed somewhere out of the way to charge away, it emits a blue light round its centre when plugged in so is visible seen when on.

There is a tiny switch to turn it on and off that one needs a pen or other device to operate but this is due to not wanting it to be accidently turned off and thus always have the power there ready to charge the mobile device. Charge time wise, I found the Juicejack to take round about the same time to charger a completely dead Motorola RAZR as its own charger.

The view is to get Juicejack into as many public pubs, shops, cafes, restaurants, nightclubs and such as possible so no matter where you are if you need a charger one will be at hand. The other superb idea with Juicejack is that when using the Juicejack printed on the top is a text number whereby you can text the word charity to 88080 and you will have donated to William?s Fund, which is a worthy cause where your £1 will support Childhood Cancer Research. The hope of the company is to be able to raise £1 million to charity every month, and if the Juicejack can get into all the public places I see no reason why that isn?t possible.

So just think, being able to charge your mobile device anytime, anywhere, and the ability to donate £1 to charity while doing so, can?t be a bad thing.

All in all, I found the Juicejack a neat and clever charging device that not only would be of great advantage to have in places around town for that emergency charge-up, but would work ideally as a home hub if the family uses differing mobile phones or other devices.

We all know Google has been thrusting their Linux based OS the Android to the dev community as the mobile platform designed to revolutionise the mobile world, and the search giant has been touting Android as a totally ?open? mobile platform which everyone can develop mobile apps for.

Well it apparently turns out that Google has been telling slight ?porky pies? as Android isn?t as open as they first stated.

First off Sergei Brin, Google?s founder, has been caught making some shady investments in his wife?s new start-up. Apparently Brin channelled Google cash into his wife?s start-up by using investment strategies that covered up his direct involvement with conflict of interest, not illegal but none the less shady.

However, developers have been complaining that the Android SDK has been lax with updates which means developers simply can?t forge ahead in their Linux based developments. This is leading to Android dev?s skipping over to the Apple Mac OS for the iPhone and 3G.

Apparently an email was distributed told developers Android?s new SDK was available to download, but it was an error as the email was only supposed to go out to a selected few Android devs. Which would mean that the Android platform isn?t ?open? to all and could result in a massive exodus of Android devs to the Apple Mac OS.

So the question remains will Google?s Android actually survive this cock-up and compete on a global scale, or has Apple?s iPhone and Mac OS grown too large for Google to handle?

by Techno Witch on July 20, 2008

We are all aware that the Sony Ericsson TM506 mobile flip phone will be coming out in black on green, because it popped up of the FCC website. But maybe you are just not a green colour person, or you find the black on green a tad unsightly.

Well if you want the Sony Ericsson TM506 flip but are so put off but the colour, you may be pleased to know that the word is T-Mobile is to be offering this mid to high range 3G clamshell design mobile phone is a more restrained black on black and even black on white.

These alternate colour offerings on the Sony Ericsson TM506, which holds the codename Bella, will still be toting a 2 megapixel camera, web feeds reader for RSS, podcasts, news and the like, aGPS, along with support for dual band 3G UMTS/HSDPA frequencies.

Twinkle, a location based twitter client for the Apple iPhone has hit the Apple App Store. Much like native iPhone apps such as Twitterific, Twinkle takes the added convenience of a native Twitter client to the Apple iPhone?s official applications repository.

Twinkle has been about for a while on jailbroken first-gen Apple iPhones, but now Twinkle has hit the Apple App Store with this version for the Apple iPhone 3G along with updated iPhone?s that run non-jailbroken 2.0 OS firmwares, and works much in the same way as the jailbroken Twinkle app.

With the Apple iPhone 3G and updated iPhone?s now supporting geo-location via GPS or mobile triangulation, Twinkle app automatically finds the users location when it launches. Furthermore, Twinkle has been given a visual makeover with a new 2.0-ish UI.

Get Twinkling and Twittering with Twinkle available from the Apple App Store.

The iPhone Dev Team has kept their word and gone live with the Pwnage Tool 2.0 app; apparently the iPhone Dev Team wished to push the Pwnage tool out into the wild before any official launch, so that means eager iPhoner?s can have a go at the jailbreaking toll early.

Word is Pwnage Tool is the most safest and easiest way to jailbreak, unlock and activate the Apple iPhone. With Pawnage Tool the iPhoner can hack their iPhone firmware file to auto-restore any 1st-gen iPhone and iPod Touch to full jailbroken status.

Unfortunately, Pwnage Tool 2.0 will not unlock the Apple iPhone 3G, so all you iPhone 3Ger?s out there are out of luck until later when the dev team manage to crack the 3G. Pwange Tool 2.0 will jailbreak and activate the iPhone 3G but it will remain tied to AT&T.

Word is the iPhone Dev Team will roll out an update in due time to unlock the iPhone 3G SIM. Check out the video below for instructions on the Pwnage Tool 2.0.

Becker GPS Z100 Crocodile

by Techno Witch on July 19, 2008

Don’t worry, this GPS navigation device won’t eat you up if you fail to make the right turn at it’s instructions. The Becker GPS Z100 Crocodile is dubbed so since it comes with an outer casing that resembles a croc’s scales. Features include a 4.3″ widescreen display, maps of 40 countries in Europe thanks to Navteq (that comes in a 2GB SD memory card), an SD memory card slot, support for live traffic information and is powered by the SiRF Star III GPS receiver chip with the SiRF InstantFixII functionality. There is no word on pricing or availability, but this makes it look more of a ladies’ GPS system no thanks to the croc-like case.
