August 2008

On many of the online shows that I am prone to watch on my typical work day, I have been seeing ads for the ?Mojave Experiment?. At first I thought it was a reference to the Area 51/Roswell incident, but Roswell is actually nowhere near the Mojave desert.

The Mojave experiment is actually an ad campaign by Microsoft for Windows Vista that is more of a response to the negative criticism that Vista has been receiving.

The ad features some random people responding to some questions about Windows Vista. Microsoft asks them questions like ?Why haven?t you upgraded yet?? They usually say that they have heard about all the problems. Oddly enough, they don?t show the responses where people say, ?I couldn?t afford it?.

These people are then introduced to a new version of Windows called Windows Mojave. The people respond favorably, and then Microsoft tells them that Windows Mojave is actually Windows Vista. (Surprise!) The ad then shows the footage of the people wanting to get Windows Vista.

I usually don?t like ending an article with a question that isn?t rhetorical, but I want to open up the floor for comments. Is Microsoft manipulating this little experiment to purposely produce favorable results about Windows Vista? If so, then this isn?t an experiment, is it?

As soon as I see the Vertu logo I sigh, will I ever be able to afford such a sexy phone, Vertu the luxury brand by Nokia has gone one step further this time and launched its high end Signature series, this phone just oozes sex appeal, my hand raising to see if I can actually touch such a fine specimen.

Ok, it is only a phone, but now it has 3G for the first time and if that?s not cool enough it?s got WiFi for an added bonus. This distinctive phone also has an innovative SIM draw, allowing you to change SIMS without having to take the battery out first.

The Room Tech Beingz Alarm Clock

by Techno Witch on August 28, 2008

Alarm clocks are probably the most obnoxious of gadgets, even if it is one of the most important. I typically just use my phone as an alarm clock, however, I’ve regretted that on several occasions. Usually when my Mother decides because she’s awake everyone else should be too and decides to call me a good 2 hours before I actually need to wake up. Which is why a smart person would probably turn off their cellphone and use an alarm clock to wake them up everyday. Well this particular alarm clock has ways of making sure you get out of bed everyday.

The Room Tech Beingz Alarm Clock is able to open its mouth and shout out three different alarm sounds. It chooses from the three at random, so you’ll never know which noise you’ll get. It also is able to play music and dance, which should be enough to at least make you crack your eyes open. It includes an FM radio and is able to connect to your MP3 player. It is currently being sold for $49.99 on Entertainment Earth.

Chinavision dual band smartphone with projector

by Techno Witch on August 28, 2008

What can we say about this new smartphone from chinavision, apart from are they crazy? One thing I never expected to find on a phone was a projector!

Seriously this projector is said to project an image from a distance of up to 5 feet, and the image will be displayed on the wall or wherever you wish at about 32 x 40 inches in size.

Looking at the smartphone itself, it has MP3 and a MP4 player, has a 1.3-megapixel camera and video recorder, plus a 2.4-inch screen which is a touchscreen.

I think the guys at chinavision have been inspired by a few phones in the mobile world, the dual band smartphone looks like a Nokia from the handset, the interface looks like an iPhone, and as we mentioned they decided that everyone is sure to want a projector on their phone, why wouldn’t they? so went straight ahead and included one on the phone.

Looking at the Chinavision website the information just states that it will be available soon, what?s the betting this smartphone won?t be sold anywhere but China.

It?s all going on in the mobile world in Canada thanks to Rogers, who seem to be making a really strong case for GSM networks there. They already have the Blackberry Bold and iPhone 3G and now it looks like they are going to be getting the Palm Treo Pro in September 17.

We really have to take our hat over to the guys over at Rogers as they do keep bringing the latest and greatest to Canada, seriously leveraging their position as Canada?s GSM carrier to good effect even if their rate plan cost are not so impressive.

So what is the new Palm Treo Pro, well if you don?t know its Palm?s newest Windows Mobile smartphone with 3G (HSDPA), GPS, a QWERTY keyboard it also sports a 2 megapixel camera, the touchscreen is 320×320 and it also has a microSD card slot. Let?s hope that Palm Treo Pro brings Palm back to the top of its game of the smartphone industry.

We have heard the rumour that Rogers will start offering the Palm Treo Pro on September 17, but we do not know what they will be charging for it, but as a guess it could be similar to the Palm Treo Pro that AT&T will be offering which has a price rumoured at $549.

We will keep you updated as and when we receive the information.

Steve Jobs virtually killed off by news gaffe

by Techno Witch on August 28, 2008

It appears the Apple big wig Steve Jobs snuffed it via electronic gaffe yesterday, as a slip up by news outlet Bloomberg mistakenly sent an incomplete obituary of the Apple CEO over the wire.

A tipster managed to get hold of the retraction file and sent it to gossip blog Gawker. This file not only contained the preliminary obit on Jobs, but also listed contacts for a more extensive story.

To summarise Mr. Jobs accomplishments as per obit was that he ?helped make personal computers as easy to use as telephones, changed the way animated films are made, persuaded consumers to tune into digital music, and refashioned the mobile phone.”

This pre-obituary isn?t out of the ordinary for large news outlets as they tend to have notable peoples obits well prepared in advance, so when the time does come only minor detail need adjusting.

Bloomberg of course released a retraction soon after, which only made a vague reference to the content of the gaffe.

Phones 4u lose two top directors

by Techno Witch on August 28, 2008

Phones 4u has just lost two of their most senior directors, Jim Slater, marketing director who is believed to be leaving although a Phones 4u spokesperson wouldn?t confirm.

Slater, who was instrumental in positioning Phones 4u?s brand in the 18 to 35 year old bracket, is said to be leaving due to personal reasons and wishing to be closer to his family in the south east.

Slater is understood to be retuning to the sports business and is believed to be working as a consultant to two sporting organisations.

The second director to leave Phone 4u is their MD, David Downie, who left earlier in the year to join HSS, a hire specialist company, as their MD. Downie came to Phones 4u in 2005 from Asda, and was eventually appointed retail MD for Phones 4u.

A spokesperson for Phones 4u confirmed that Downie had left however stated Jim Slater still works for Phones 4u.

LP 2 CD for easy conversion

by Techno Witch on August 28, 2008

We have seen our fair share of LP conversion devices in the past, but the LP 2 CD this time round takes a different route by converting all your old records into CD format directly, all without the need for a PC.

Step up, the LP 2 CD: a one-stop-shop for popping your 33, 45 and 78 rpm records direct to compact disc, with zero bother. And because it doesn’t need to run through a computer, you can hook it up to a pair of speakers to use like a regular stereo for records and compact discs. The LP 2 CD cuts out the middleman by incorporating a flash memory and CD burner, so you never need to connect to a PC or Mac at all; it’s all right in one place with no cables for the mice to nibble through. Just whack your old vinyl platters on to the turntable, start playing the record and press the record button on the control panel. Your grooves will be automatically transformed into digital sound files as they play and stored on an inbuilt flash memory that can handle up to 80 minutes of music at once. A nifty track recognition mode senses the gaps between songs and splits the track listing up for you so you don’t end up with one long recording.

The entire LP 2 CD package will ship in a solid metal casing, featuring a high-quality belt-drive, premium tone arm and cartridge. It might retail for a rather pricey £299.95, but think of the benefits of transferring your LP collection (or your grandfather’s) over to the CD format. Time to move on with the times, man, never mind the warm tones that pro-LP folk always tout.

Garmin?s Nuvifone delayed until 2009

by Techno Witch on August 28, 2008

Another year, another IFA trade show and another glimps of Garmin?s Nuvifone, The Garmin representive whipped his Nuvifone prototype out to give the guys over at engadgetmobile a quick look at the much talked about device.

Garmin have been talking about the Nuvifone for some time now, but from what could be seen there really is nothing new to see, well unless the rep was hiding something. Garmin are being very secretive not allowing any video recordings of the interface, basically the home screen was the only thing to be seen, what the hell is so special about the Nuvifone that Garmin are obsessed with keeping us in suspense?

What was funny was when the Garmin rep tried to show off how the Nuvifone could navigate better than the iPhone the Nuvifone crashed, of course it could have been just a one off but didn?t really impress engadgetmobile saying that the iPhone and Nuvifone have that in common they both seem to like crashing.

The rep reported that the Navifone is delayed until 2009, do we really care now? There is only so much teasing someone can take, now you see it, now you don?t, if the guys over at Garmin don?t watch out no one will want it when it finally appears.
