The UFO Night Light

by Techno Witch on October 30, 2008

As adults, dark spooky rooms are absolutely not supposed to be scary enough for a night light, it’s somewhere in the rule book for adults that I have yet to see. However, if you feel the need to break the rules, you might enjoy the night lights sold by the Etsy seller Katsudesigns. Even if you don’t have a fear of the dark, you might want to pick one up just so you don’t end up stubbing your toe when you attempt to stumble towards the bathroom in the middle of the night.

The cute little UFO is hand cut from an aluminum sheet then added to it is the colorful piece of plexiglass. The plexiglass part can be purchased in three different colors, blue, red and green. In addition to the UFO she also sells a rocket ship, jet fighter and a robot night light. Surprisingly she actually has a few in stock of each. Usually with Etsy products only one is in stock at a time. You can pick one up for $40 a piece.

Western Digital adds FireWire 800 interface

by Techno Witch on October 30, 2008

Mac users often get the short end of the stick, since many data storage peripherals that have been released are missing the much faster FireWire port. Fret not, as Western Digital has decided to throw in the towel by adding a high speed FireWire 800 interface to its range of popular My Passport Studio portable drives, finally offering Mac users as well as other creative professionals the fast performance they need. The new interface will no doubt be the perfect storage companion for the newly introduced Apple MacBook Pro computer. Just to give you a glance of what FireWire connectivity can do, read on right after the jump.

According to Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager of WD’s Branded Products and Consumer Electronics Groups, “Photographers and videographers, be they creative pros or Mac computer enthusiasts, have a genuine need for large amounts of fast, portable storage for their high-definition files. With a new FireWire 800 interface, My Passport Studio speeds up editing and transferring of big media files making it perfect for performance-minded Mac computer users on the go.”

Users will definitely fall in love with the integrated illuminated capacity gauge that informs users of just how much spare space left there is within the hard drive, and this gauge is powered as long as the device is plugged into a computer. Of course, if you happen to be missing a FireWire port on your computer, there is always the good old standby – USB 2.0, although the data transfer rate of USB 2.0 won’t be able to hold a candle to what FireWire offers.

You will be able to pick up the new My Passport Studio with FireWire 800/400 from select retailers and at WD’s online store, picking up the 400GB and 500GB models for $229.99 and $249.99, respectively.

Google G1 Vs iPhone Beauty or the Beast?

by Techno Witch on October 30, 2008

It?s no secret that Google?s first foray into the lucrative mobile phone market happened today in London, but what exactly can the Google G1 offer over the extremely popular iPhone 3G. Well for starters the iPhone wins hands down within the looks department, the Google G1 is the ugly duckling whereas the iPhone stunning sleek look is a must for many fashionista?s, however some may be put off by its popularity. But they say beauty is only skin deep and maybe the G1 beast will surprise us with its inner strengths.

Yes, the Google G1 does just that, the inner strength is how the G1 will attract the masses, with its Android open-source operating system which is partly developed by Google. The G1 definitely gets a ten out of ten for usability. It boasts a slightly better camera than the iPhone at three-megapixels but again just like the iPhone it cannot record video. It has a 3.2 inch touchscreen display and a slide out keyboard, although it must be said that the block on the right hand side of the unit and the ultra small keys do not sit pretty with keen typists.

It?s the operating systems and applications that really shine on the G1, the built in GPS works wonders with Google Maps, and for those of you who doesn?t know their north to their south you will find a handy internal compass allowing you to know which your heading at all times.

The G1 accesses the internet with high speed via the 3G phone network and Wi-Fi. The User interface is pretty good, you can move across the page by moving your fingers across the G1?s touchscreen, if you want to access the Google search bar this can be done with just one click and even when you are in another program.

The Android operating system shines in many ways, one is that the potential for improvements are huge, with the platform open to developers allowing them to create countless applications for the mobile handsets. We believe the Google G1 is much more a pocket computer than a mobile phone.

by Techno Witch on October 30, 2008

The Samsung C6620 Windows Mobile smartphone which hasn?t yet been announced has been leaked on the website of Italian mobile carrier TIM. The Samsung C6620 is a tri-band GSM handset that is only 11.9mm thick.

The Samsung C6620 sports a full QWERTY keyboard along with HSDPA and UNTS, a QVGA landscape display, a 2 megapixel camera, and Windows Mobile 6.1 running the show.

The Samsung C6620 is a mid-range Samsung handset so will lack any GPS and Wifi unfortunately, and as said, the Samsung C6620 is not available as yet, but when it does hit it should command a price of roughly 199 Euros on a pre-pay basis.

The T-Mobile Google G1 android touchscreen landed today in London and is said to be the number one competitor with the Apple iPhone. Although with Research in Motion hot on it?s heals with the launch of the BlackBerry Storm we believe these three smartphones will be in the top three categories.

Thousands of gadget loves in Britain are expected to rush to be first in line for the G1. But it?s a different story in the US were the Google handset was on sale yesterday already retailers are slashing the price of the smartphone to boost the sales.

The Google mobile comes free with a £40 a month contract exclusively with T-Mobile and the G1 boasts several high-end features including wireless internet and global satellite positioning as well as several built in Google applications.

As Google move into the lucrative mobile phone market taking on rivals such as BlackBerry, Apple, Nokia and Microsoft we wonder if it really will compete with these smartphone giants. Well the proof is in the pudding so let?s see how the sale figures compare in the fourth quarter.
