December 2008

If you’re looking to help develop your kids hand-eye coordination, this Mr. Robot Head would do a great job with it. It comes from Think Geek and is meant for kids ages 4 and on up. It’s basically a robotic twist to the Operation games. Same concept, trying to be careful and not sound the buzzer. It just has a slightly different object to the game. The nice extra is that you’ll never have to put batteries into this guy. He has other methods to power himself up.

Just crank the handle on the back of the robot and he’ll be powered up and ready to go. The object of the game is to get the handle from one end of the wire to the other without actually touching the wire. If you touch the wire the LED robot eyes will start to flash and the head will then make strange noises. All in all the game is endlessly frustrating and will keep the kids busy. It will cost you $28.99 for this 9? square.

Teac?s New iPod Docking Station

by Techno Witch on December 29, 2008

New iPod docks are a dime a dozen. (Actually, iPod docks are usually more expensive than that, but my point is the numerous models and not the price.) In short, there isn?t much to say about any new iPod dock when it hits the market. This one that you see here is from Teac, and the TD-X300i looks like it might stand out in a few areas.

Let?s get the specs out of the way first. The TD-X300i supports CD-R/RW and MP3 audio files. The dock itself is compatible with all iPods from the fourth generation.

Some of you may have noticed the unique speaker configuration. It has a subwoofer with a maximum output power of 5Wx2 + 15W. You might also have noticed how flat the other peripheral speakers are, and they are a product of NXT technology.

I?ve been hearing a lot about NXT technology lately. I believe that they have invited me to their breakfast at CES, and I am anxious to see what else they have to offer. Stay tuned for that article.

Speaking of CES, Teac would be insane not to have the TD-X300i on display at Las Vegas this year. Especially when the new iPod docking station is planned to be released in January 2009 anyway. The price is reported to be at ?235.

Hidden Grove Fitness Armoire Collection

by Techno Witch on December 29, 2008

About a month ago, I reported on the Fitness Cube, a piece of multi-functional exercise equipment that folds up into a neat little box for storage. The Home Office Collection from Hidden Grove is another giant step in the continued quest for exercise equipment that stays out of the way in your home.

Hidden Grove didn?t just make their exercise equipment into something compact that the user can stash out of the way in a closet, but made former space-crowding exercise equipment and tucked it tastefully away into an Armoire.

The Hidden Grove Home Office Collection comes in three forms. The first is the Computer Desk with Bookshelf Armoire with Multi-Position Bench and Chrome Dumbbells (1 pair each at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 pounds) for about $2,699. The second is the Computer Desk with Bookshelf Armoire with a treadmill for about $2,999. The third is the Computer Desk with Bookshelf Armoire with Treadmill, multi-position bench and chrome dumbbells (same type as the first computer desk) for about $3,499.

I?m going to digress here, but every time I hear the word ?Armoire?, I think of that Seinfeld episode with the Soup Nazi. Some of you might not remember that secondary plotline where Elaine is trying to get an Armoire for her apartment. Okay, that has little to do with this article except for the Armoire association, but if you want these Armoire at your place, see the specs and prices in the previous paragraph.

If you’re looking for a light that will turn a few heads, this would do the trick. Technically, it’s not a light, it is actually just the thing that holds the light. Although the seller does thankfully suggest several different lights that would work great with this little man. He will hold your light steady while balancing on two thin wires. It will hold a low voltage lamp that although it won’t produce a ton of light, it might work well as a dim reading light.

Since it is such a dim light, it would be less likely to disturb others that might be trying to sleep. The light comes in three sizes and four styles. One of those styles being a female version. All of which feature a ground aluminum finish. Although the lamp isn’t included, the system mounting bracket/Kable Lite mounting feet are included. Once you get the low voltage lamp, the little man is bendable and so is the wire that is attached to the lamp. Which means you can get him at the perfect angle to suit your lighting needs. He is a bit expensive, especially considering you’ll have to spend at least $30 more to get the lamp itself. You can pick him up for $216.

Pogo Sketch

by Techno Witch on December 29, 2008

The digital pen market hasn?t really peaked as yet, as the translation from writing with the pen to digital text has never really been smooth. Ten One Design has created the Pogo Sketch stylus, which isn?t really a digital pen per se, but is designed to be used with touch screen devices.

The Pogo Sketch seems to favor the Mac products, and the company claims that it is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch. It also works well on the big trackpads that are on MacBooks.

Another use for the Pogo Sketch is a little help when it comes to touch-sensitivity. Think about situations when you take out your touch-sensitive device in cold weather, and you have to use it with gloves on. Rather than removing your gloves to expose your hands to the cold, the Pogo Sketch will give you an extra edge for touch-sensitive work, and will also keep the screen free and clear of smudge-prints.

The company also stresses that the Pogo Sketch is a low-priced alternative to electronic tablets like the ones made from Wacom. Sure, you could use a professional drawing tablet, but why spend all that money when you can purchase this low-priced pen? And when I say low price, I?m talking about $14.95.

The Vent-Miser helps you save money

by Techno Witch on December 29, 2008

In the winter for many people there’s a room that really doesn’t need to be heated as badly. Actually you might be happier if it received none at all most of the time, especially since most people are trying to spend less money right now. However, if you keep the vent closed all the time, it’s entirely possible to just forget to open it again. Although you don’t really want much heat getting into the room, I’m sure you don’t want an in home iceberg. Well this vent makes your life easier, it could help you save money, while still keeping the room at a reasonable temperature.

The vent is meant to be easily installed in place of the old vent. Then, once installed it can be programmed to open on certain days, and then close again. It would be especially convenient for a guest room that you don’t often need. You could set it up to open the day the guest arrives, or the day before. Granted I’m sure you could physically walk over and either open or close the vent. However, this does simplify things a little. They can be purchased on Amazon in different sizes and colors to accommodate your home. The Vent-Misers range in price from $22.49 on up to $27.
