by Techno Witch on January 19, 2009

The latest word on the net waves is Palm is in negotiations with Vodafone with a view to bringing the Palm Pre to the United Kingdom.

As we all know, the Palm Pre with webOS is expected to bring Palm back to the forefront of the mobile phone arena, and while Vodafone UK isn?t officially commenting on the possibility of the Palm Pre having Vodafone as its carrier, Sprint in the US, someone in Vodafone?s customer service team has confirmed the negotiations are happening.

Although as yet nothing is solid and it is unclear if Palm is planning a single exclusive carrier in the UK or if the Palm Pre will become available via multiple networks, so lets just wait and see.

DIY Scrabble Keyboard

by Techno Witch on January 19, 2009

If you have a great love for the game of Scrabble and want something unique to commemorate your hobby, why not check out this DIY Scrabble keyboard? It is a beauty no matter how you look at it, featuring both wood Scrabble tiles as well as brushed aluminum for that elegant look. The points on individual letters have been modified though in order to display the key’s secondary function. Having one of this clearly beats the rush of making a word out of your initial rack. Too bad this isn’t going to be mass produced, otherwise it would rake in a handsome amount for the manufacturer.

by Techno Witch on January 19, 2009

Research based on a study of over 4000 people in the US and UK claims mobile phone users are becoming increasingly frustrated and confused by the number of features on mobile phones.

The study was carried out by Mformation and claims that based on said 95 percent of mobile phone users would try out new services if those services technology was more straightforward.

In fact figures show that 61 percent of users find setting up a new mobile phone on par with moving a bank account, 85 percent say they were frustrated that the handset was too difficult to set up and 61 percent actually stop using an app if it doesn?t work immediately.

Geesh, guess mobile phone manufacturers better start making things more tech low then.

Sanyo releases brightest two-lamp projector

by Techno Witch on January 19, 2009

When it comes to projectors, you can pretty much sleep easy at night if you have purchased a Sanyo. After all, that company has a pretty good track record with its releases, and this time round we’re treated to what is dubbed the brightest two lamp projector in the industry, also known as the PLC-XF71. This model offers the highest luminance in its class at a whopping 10,000 lumens, bringing high resolution images right into your (living/corporate) room thanks to a three mirror system that boasts improved light uniformity, alongside high reliability with an exclusive Active Maintenance Filter (AMF) system.

In addition to holding the title of the brightest projector in its class (one which we’re sure will be overtaken by another model, not necessarily from the same company, in due time), the PLC-XF71 is able to throw a resolution of 1,024 x 768 against a suitable surface, complete with a contrast rating of 3,000:1 contrast ratio. By using a three-mirror system to achieve uniform light output from two lamps, the PLC-XF71 is able to reduce color irregularities while delivering incredibly high quality 4:3 images. Not only that, you will be able to find the exclusive Durable Inorganic Optical System (DIOS) with optical components that are heat and UV resistant in the PLC-XF71 itself.

Sanyo has also done well to include the PLC-XF71 with its exclusive Active Maintenance Filter (AMF) system that is able to automatically detect airflow and advance clean filter material as and when required, hence reducing maintenance while increasing reliability across time. According to Mark Holt, the Vice President and General Manager for SANYO’s Presentation Technologies Division, “This two-lamp projector is bright enough to use in large auditoriums, staging events or any other venue that requires a projector that can emit a good deal of light. The addition with our AMF technology the PLC-XF71 can reliably meet the demands of our customers in the large event/conference and halls market as well as the digital signage and office-use markets.” Expect the Sanyo PLC-XF71 to ship this month, but do be prepared to fork out a whopping $16,995 for this.

Creative has long been in the computing audio industry for customers to know they offer a wide range of products that cater for just about any budget and need, and today we’ll look at something more niche since it involves hardcore gamers. Of course, regular gamers will also appreciate the technology found in the Creative Tournament Gaming Headset HS-1100 that features Silencer, the company’s proprietary noise cancelling technology. This is the first product in the world to do so, and we are extremely sure that it won’t be the last either. What is Creative’s Silencer technology all about? Judging by the name alone, it shouldn’t be too hard to deduce – this is a breakthrough in voice technology that enables the user’s voice to be clearly heard by other gamers whom they are communicating with as the Silencer is smart enough to remove ambient background noise so that voice fidelity is improved.

This opens up a whole new world of opportunity for gamers, as they won’t suffer from a loss in communication with loud music blaring in the background or having a dog make a ruckus outside – the Silencer is more than able to meet these challenges, removing them as ambient noise. This enables both teammates and allies to have a clearer communication channel than ever before where online gaming is concerned. There were live demonstrations of the Creative Tournament Gaming Headset at CES 2009, with professional gamer Fatal1ty endorsing the product.

According to Steve Erickson, VP and GM of audio and video at Creative, “With the Silencer technology, gamers will be blown away whether they’re playing an intense 5 v 5 Counter Strike match or a raid in World of Warcraft. Our award-winning audio engineers are passionate about gaming, so they had a lot of hands-on experience when they invented Silencer, which was developed specifically to give gamers a competitive advantage.”

I certainly don’t doubt what he says, as I used to be a gamer myself and having a headset like that sure beats shouting to one another in a room where all five of us are huddled around our respective computers in a game of Counter Strike. Other features found in the Creative HS-1100 include :-

  • X-Fi Crystalizer technology
  • X-Fi CMSS-3D technology
  • VoiceFX which offers up to 18 selectable voice-morph personas that range from Aliens to Orc, for more engaging in-game voice communication
  • 40mm Neodymium magnet drivers for excellent sound quality
  • A detachable microphone boom allowing the headset to be used as regular headphones in non-gaming scenarios
  • Ultra-comfortable earpads for extended gaming sessions
  • An in-line volume adjustment with microphone mute control
  • Foldable earcups offer convenient storage

The Creative Tournament USB Gaming Headset HS-1100 will ship sometime this spring for $129.99, which ain’t too shabby. It would be interesting to see how rival companies will meet this new contender where professional gaming headsets are concerned. What do you think is the next possible improvement which can be made in this area of gaming?

The word is from those environmentally minded people at Greenpeace that the Samsung F268 is the greenest mobile phone on the planet, a big claim to green fame, which one hopes Greenpeace can back up without question.

Apparently the Samsung F268 rated better than the Nokia 3110 Evolve, the Sony Ericsson C905, the Motorola V9 and the LG KT520 and the research results where published in the Greenpeace report ?Green Electronics: The Search Continues.?

The Samsung F268 doesn?t contain toxic substances like PVC while components don?t have brominated flame resistant additives, and meets all the requirements of the certification Energy Star, the criteria set by the US Environment Agency.

Share Our Strength Operation No Kid Hungry Campaign

by Techno Witch on January 19, 2009

A campaign to raise funds to help end childhood hunger and to encourage Americans to hold food drives was launched on the 12th of Jan called Operation No Kid Hungry, and between then and the 1st of March subscribers to all major wireless mobile phone carriers can donate $5.00 to Stare Our Strength.

The donating can be made by texting ?SHARE? to 20222, and AT&T has said they will match donations up to $100,000.

Share Our Strength is a leading national organisation which is dedicated to putting an end to childhood hunger in America. One would think that in a country such as America there wouldn?t be any childhood hunger, but apparently there are, and this is one good cause to support.
