The Film LCD Clock for die hard film fans

by Techno Witch on February 13, 2009

There are plenty of people that still prefer film to digital cameras. They have their reasons and usually they like to knock the ones using digital and the ones using digital like to get their jabs in on them. Everyone has their opinion and they can’t help but let the world know about it. Well now here’s a way to display that you’re a film lover and clearly not one of the digital fans. You wouldn’t want to get mixed up with their kind.

This odd little clock features LCD display that shows the time as well as a calendar. Thanks to that, it’d make this the perfect desk clock as opposed to using it for a bedside clock. Homeloo, who is selling the clock, does warn that this is very limited, so if you love the clock you might want to get on it as soon as possible. It measures 210 x 170 x 100 mm. It is a bit pricey though for you to rush out and grab it up. It will cost you $53 from Homeloo.

Novatel Wireless announces Ovation MC995D USB modem

by Techno Witch on February 13, 2009

With the advent of 3G and HSDPA connections, it is more and more common to see USB modems being plugged into notebooks and netbooks alike, as not everywhere you go will have a Wi-Fi hotspot, but at least you have a higher chance of securing a decent Internet connection with the USB modem. Novatel Wireless plays to this crowd with its new Ovation MC995D high performance USB modem that targets both consumers and enterprise users who want a reliable and secure Internet access no matter where they are, relying on leading HSPA cellular data networks. It is currently optimized for Europe, however, despite being a global modem that is capable of providing theoretical download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps and upload speeds up to 5.76 Mbps (real world performance differs greatly though, so beware of marketing claims). It comes in an extremely streamlined form factor and has a proprietary locking swivel design which complies with FCC SAR requirements. The MC995D comes with an auto-install connection manager for easy set up and plays nice with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. You can even turn this into an impromptu USB flash drive thanks to a microSDHC memory card slot that turns can hold up to 32GB of storage space. There is no word on pricing, but we do know that the MC995D will be out sometime in Q2 2009.

Not only does it offer your eyes some respite from the sun’s glare and harmful UV rays, it also doubles up as a Bluetooth headset that does not look as ridiculous as a piece of plastic hanging off your ear. All in all, the Bluetooth headset has a talk time of 3.5 hours and standby time of 90 hours per charge, and is compliant with Bluetooth 2.0 standards. It has an operation range of 10 meters as usual, and works with virtually all Bluetooth-enabled phones. Having the lenses itself incorporate solar panels to keep the headset charged each time you’re outside by harnessing the power of the sun.

SET card game goes electronic

by Techno Witch on February 13, 2009

Both the New York Times and Franklin Electronic Publishers, Incorporated have come together to unveil the latest offspring of their alliance – the creation of a handheld electronic version of the award-winning card game, SET. Yeah, we haven’t play SET in real life to date, but if it is made into an electronic version and has picked up a bunch of awards in the process while being part of a newspaper, surely there is merit in it being playable at the very least, right? While we don’t think it will be as immersive as those games which we see on Game Addicts, surely the brainiacs among us will whoop with joy upon hearing this piece of news! SET is now available on the crossword and game pages of www.nytimes.com, and has fast become one of its most frequently viewed pages. As for the electronic version of SET, it will feature a color LCD display, four different versions of the game (Classic, Timed, Puzzle and Arcade), a myriad of difficulty levels as well as a bunch of other features. You can check out its debut at the Set Enterprises, Inc. booth at Toy Fair in New York this coming February 15th.

According to Toshihide Hokari, senior vice president, chief operating officer of Franklin Electronic Publishers, “Franklin’s version of SET takes the classic card game to a new level of brain-twisting fun. Designed for both adults and kids, SET is an addictive, highly original family game of visual perception and logic that can be played at any time, in any location.”

Since SET has been in the market for years as a card game and having built up a pretty strong cult following, it is a no brainer to turn it into an electronic title – after all, that is how one should move forward, right? Take some examples here – we have electronic versions of crosswords as well as the much loved Sudoku, so there is absolutely no reason not to lump SET under the same category. Guess the younger folk might have their PSPs and DS Lites while riding the subway, but the older ones will soon carry around digital versions of SET in their trenchcoat pockets. It will retail for $39.99 a pop.

NVIDIA works with Microsoft for cheap but powerful PCs

by Techno Witch on February 13, 2009

We all know who NVIDIA is and what they do – they’re currently have the best video cards in the market after going through a few years of tussle with ATi (which has been gobbled up by AMD already along the way) for computer graphics supremacy. As a company, they’re certainly not going to rest on their laurels and continue to forge onwards with new developments in technology. Their latest effort is a joint effort with Microsoft to deliver what they dub an outstanding computing experience on a tiny, low power PC in the form of their NVIDIA ION which has been Certified for Windows Vista. The combination of NVIDIA ION and premium versions of Microsoft Windows is a potent one, enabling both small form factor notebooks and desktop PCs to own rich media capabilities and full graphics support for the first time without having to break the bank.

Microsoft has already validated NVIDIA ION with certified Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) drivers for Windows Vista Home Premium, and both companies are working closely with other PC manufacturers, software developers and Windows eco-system partners so that ION-based PCs will be able to hit the market by the time summer of 2009 rolls around. As usual, us consumers are extremely price sensitive (and even more so in this uncertain economic climate), but fret not – you will be surprised to learn that these ION-based mini-notebooks and compact desktop PCs will offer industry-leading performance from price points that start as low as $299. Yeah, we’re shaking our heads in disbelief as well while getting the intern to pinch us.

Microsoft guarantees that the NVIDIA ION platform found in upcoming ION-based PCs will deliver :-

Silky smooth 1080p high definition video including Blu-ray movies
Exciting video game play with support for Microsoft’s DirectX 10 API
Support for premium Windows Vista features including Aero Glass and Flip3D
GPU acceleration for faster photo editing and video transcoding

Sounds like a dream, eh?

DirecTV app for the Apple iPhone mysteriously appears

by Techno Witch on February 13, 2009

With the Apple iPhone the iPhoner can already control their home automation system, Netflix account and their VUDU queue, so how about controlling your DirecTV set top box as well.

Satcaster is fairly big on remote scheduling, and although this somewhat mysterious DirecTV application for the Apple iPhone doesn?t appear to yet have a public purpose it doesn?t take a genius to figure it out.

Word hitting the net waves is this limited beta app hasn?t even opened up for testers as of yet, so maybe we are looking towards a new apple iPhone application sitting on the horizon, who knows?

Rubik?s TouchCube coming your way

by Techno Witch on February 13, 2009

Rubik’s Cube is one puzzle game that is ranked among the classics for obvious reasons, and we’re pleased to report that technology has finally caught up with it in the process. Taking a cue from the world of new devices where most of them feature some sort of touch technology, the humble, sticker-laden Rubik’s Cube is now adorned with touch technology, and is known as the Rubik?s TouchCube instead. This is a milestone where puzzle toys are concerned, and holds the honor of being the first completely electronic solvable Cube in the world. What used to take several turns to solve requires deft touches and swipes to bring the puzzle game to a whole new level. The Rubik?s TouchCube will debut in New York City next week at the American International Toy Fair that will be held from February 15th to 18th.

Sounds pretty amazing, eh, so that alone begs the next question, “How does it work?” For starters, the Rubik?s TouchCube comes with integrated touch sensor technology on all its six sides, complete with a motion-detecting accelerometer and colored lights in every square. Heck, it will even mimic the movements of the original 3×3 cube – all you need to do is swipe a finger across three squares and the lights will follow to turn the side of the Cube. If you happen to make an ?L? shape, then it will turn the top face of the Cube instead. It will be interesting to see whether existing Rubik’s Cube solvers will be able to break the world record time in solving using a touch interface, and could we look at a couple of seconds now? Do bear in mind that this could be rather challenging as the motion-detecting accelerometer will only recognize moves made on the top side of the Cube, so that the player?s other fingers will not affect the lights on other sides when holding it.
