Should India ban copy clone mobile phones?

India is said to be blocking the sales of cheap copy Chinese mobile phones and accessories, in an effort to fight terrorism. Nokia and other handset makers have also been lobbying.

Indian Cellular Association, which is the lobbying group speaking for many major handset manufacturers in the country. The phones which apparently are coming from China even have fake batteries that can dangerously explode. Some have been shipped without the ?international mobile equipment identity? number, which allows handsets to be traced and tracked in an aid to prevent terrorism.

As much as 40% of Chinese replica ?whitebox handsets? are exported. The ICA estimates that as many as 1 – 1.5 million handsets imported to India on a monthly basis are just cheap replica?s produced and made in southern China. For more information please visit
